A finished example
One job, start to finish.
Sam Rivera is made up, and so are the companies. The rest is what Tailorleaf does with a resume like Sam's: the posting it read, the lines it picked, the one rewrite it held back, and the resume and cover letter exactly as they export.
Nothing on this page was typed in by hand except Sam's master resume and the posting.
1. The posting
Senior billing engineer at Ledgerly
Sam pasted this in. Tailorleaf read it once and pulled out what it asks for.
You'll own our billing platform end to end. What you'll need: 5+ years with TypeScript, Postgres at scale, experience with Kubernetes, billing or payments experience. React is a plus.
| Requirement | Required? | In Sam's resume? |
|---|---|---|
| 5+ years with TypeScript | Required | Yes |
| Postgres at scale | Required | Yes |
| Experience with Kubernetes | Required | Missing |
| Billing or payments experience | Required | Yes |
| React | A plus | Yes |
The score is Tailorleaf's own count of the requirements the resume mentions. It isn't an employer's screening score, and it can't say whether Sam gets a call.
2. The lines
Six lines picked, three left out, one held back
Sam's master resume has nine bullets across two jobs. For this posting Tailorleaf picked six, reworded one, and left the rest in the master where they belong. Each picked line shows the bullet it came from.
| In the tailored resume | Sam's master bullet | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| Moved 40 billing services to Postgres with no downtime. | Harbor Pay: Was responsible for migrating 40 billing services over to Postgres, which was completed with zero downtime. | Reworded, balanced: same facts, half the words, and it opens with what Sam did. |
| Rebuilt the invoice screen in React and TypeScript, cutting support tickets by a third. | Harbor Pay: Rebuilt the invoice screen in React and TypeScript, cutting support tickets by a third. | Kept as written. |
| Owned the on-call rotation for the payments team. | Harbor Pay: Owned the on-call rotation for the payments team. | Kept as written. Picked for the billing and payments requirement. |
| Mentored four engineers through their first launches. | Harbor Pay: Mentored four engineers through their first launches. | Kept as written. Not asked for, but it's a starred bullet and the posting says end to end. |
| Moved the API from a single VM to Docker containers and halved deploy time. | Fieldnote: Moved the API from a single VM to Docker containers and halved deploy time. | Kept as written. Picked as the nearest thing to the Kubernetes requirement, which Sam's resume doesn't cover. |
| Wrote the Go service that syncs 2 million records a night. | Fieldnote: Wrote the Go service that syncs 2 million records a night. | Kept as written. Postgres at scale. |
Left out of this copy
- Built the first design system in React, used across three apps. React is only a plus for this job, and two React lines is one too many.
- Ran the lunchtime book club. Nothing in the posting asks for it.
- Helped plan the office move. Nothing in the posting asks for it.
Held back
Moved 40 billing services to Postgres with no downtime, cutting infrastructure cost by 30 percent.
It adds a number Sam's bullet doesn't have. A rewrite can't add a fact; Sam can, by editing the master bullet if it's true.
3. The resume
As it exports
This is the same page the app prints to PDF, in the Classic layout. Open it full size, or print it yourself.
4. The cover letter
Standard length, direct tone
Written from the resume and the posting, with a note from Sam about the gap. Tailorleaf holds back any sentence that adds a fact the resume doesn't have, the same as a rewrite.
